musings

Do you ever wonder what we are doing on the internet? Sure, we use it for information, news and to learn. We also use it to shop. But what’s the deal with instant messages, email, chatting, forums and blogs? Is this the new pen pal of a previous generation? Maybe it is something else.
As I examine my own motivations I find that often I come to the internet in a hopeful frame of mind. I’m hoping that someone has responded to me. Do I have an email? What’s going on in the forum? Has anyone responded to this livejournal?
Is the internet replacing RL? Have you noticed we call it RL when we mean real life? We know that being on the internet isn’t life. It may be real but it isn’t life. So we acknowledge the distinction but shorten it to RL. Maybe my problem is that real life has been truncated to just RL. How sad that my existence and human interaction has been reduced to just two letters.
What is it that I fear that I am more open and honest with those whom I will never meet than those whom I see every day? What holds me back from making contact and starting new relationships?
Perhaps I do try but fail because of who and what I am. How may you, the reader, find the truth in this situation when it isn’t certain that I can even be honest with myself?
